Oh My God!

The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.

The God Delusion. I had a conversation with a Christian here on thoughts.com about this book. He knew that Dawkins was wrong without having read it.

That figures. They know the bible is 100% true without reading it. But I can beat that. I know dedicated fundagelicals are moon-barking mad without ever meeting them.

Don’t you think the old testament ‘an eye for an eye ’ is more sensible than ’ turn the other cheek’ ? The first has an element of justice the second cancels all hope of any punishment for wickedness. I think of Brady the child murderer who has just died, being kept alive all these years and finally nursed in a prison hospital. He never revealed to poor Keith’s mother where he buried her son.

An eye for an eye and turn the other cheek are both badly flawed and not worthy of serious practice.

Den doesn’t and eye for an eye follow the golden rule ? What sort of moral law do you believe in?

The golden rule doesn’t make any sense, either, when you think it through.

My moral system boils down to this simple rule: respect the rights of others.

It sounds pretty good Den I will have to reflect on that its not easy these days especially as many outrageous rights are often claimed.

Good point. It isn’t as easy as it first sounds. Even with legitimate rights, there are conflicting rights, and it isn’t obvious where one ends and another begins.

I think we should pay for our mistakes but circumstances must not be ignored. Judging others is the most difficult task we can ever do so let’s pick the right men and women to do it. Over the years many western democracies have grown pretty good at it and many draconian laws have been abolished.
